1.Hydrants
Both roadway and sidewalk setups must be located at least 15' from fire hydrants

2.Utility access points in roadways and on sidewalks
City agencies and companies that maintain utilities must be able to access road and sidewalk infrastructure including, but not limited to, manholes, vents, drainage, sewers, bioswales, etc.

Minimum Distances

  • Manholes, transformer vaults: 3'

  • Ventilation: grated vents, latched doors: 5'

  • Emergency exits and doors (yellow metal covers): 5'

  • Water shut-off valves, gas/electric/steam valves: 2'

3.Street Tree Canopies
Includes the trunks, branches, or canopy with/without leaves of any street tree

Roadway setups, including any elements above the 36" barriers, must maintain a 5' distance from street tree canopies at all times.

NYC Department of Parks & Recreation crews and contractors must be able to access and maintain tree beds and tree canopies at all times.

4.Regulatory Signage
Examples: No Standing Anytime, No Stopping Anytime

Roadway dining setups must not block these signs for dining or any other purpose.

Siting Distance: Vertical elements (umbrellas, etc) over 46" tall must maintain a 25' distance from sign (Exceptions: curb regulation signs, parking regulation signs, meter parking signs, and bus stop signs are exempt)

5.Safety Signage
Critical Traffic Safety Signs (Stop, Yield, Pedestrian Crossing, School Crossing signs, etc.)

Siting Distance: Vertical elements (umbrellas, etc) over 46" tall must maintain a 25' distance from sign (Exceptions: curb regulation signs, parking regulation signs, meter parking signs, and bus stop signs are exempt)

6.Bus Stops / Shelters
Siting distance from bus stops or bus shelters. Applies to both roadway and sidewalk dining setups.

Minimum distances:

  • 15' from any bus stop pole on bus-approaching side

  • 15' from the edge of any bus stop shelter on bus-approaching side

  • 5' from the non-bus-approaching side to give bus room for a clear path departure
